17 May - 9 June
Switzerland will grant to
Macedonia 1,1 million CHF for reconstruction of 12 schools in Debar,
Kicevo, Ohrid, Prilep, Strumica, Kocani and Skopje.
20 May - 26 May
The UNHCR has approved quick impact
projects for rehabilitation of the schools in Bojane, Gorjane and Karpos.
13 May - 19 May
The school building at the Tetovo
village of Miletino, rebuilt with donation from the German embassy, was
put in use.
18 March - 24 March
UNICEF is completing
the distribution of school furniture and stoves for 142 schools. Funds are
still needed for rehabilitation of 17 school buildings in the crisis
areas.
11 March - 17 March
The UNICEF is expecting a
reply from the Ministry of Education and Science regarding the realization
of the project for tolerance-building in three municipalities: Tetovo,
Kumanovo and Skopje.
According to the latest
information from UNICEF, 19 schools are to be rehabilitated.
4 March - 10 March
UNICEF
distributed school equipment to the schools in the crises regions, such as
the school in Lesok where 10 chairs, five desks and two blackboards were
distributed; a total of 130 chairs, 65 desks and 13 blackboards were
distributed in Tearce; and 120 chairs, 60 desks, five blackboards and ten
stoves were distributed in Lopate.
25 February - 3 March
The IMG has signed an
agreement with the Italian corporation for rehabilitation of the following
schools: the old school building in Matejce, the new school building in
Aracinovo, and the two schools in Slupcane.
The ECHO completed the
rehabilitation of the school in Poroj.
The UNICEF will provide
containers for the school in Nikustak.
18 February - 24 February
UNICEF provides equipment and
distributed furniture for the primary schools in the crises regions, as
well as to other schools that need it. So far, the distribution has been
completed in the schools in Konjare, Semsevo, Grusino, Opae, Lopate,
Lipkovo, Sipkovica, Brodec, Ljubanci, Ljuboten and the schools in Skopje:
"Partenie Zografski", "Liria" and "25th of May". The
distribution will cover a total of 145 primary schools, which will be
provided with a total of 9.200 school chairs, 4.300 school desks, 380
black boards and 360 heaters.
11 February - 17 February
UNICEF will provide
furniture to schools in crisis region.
4 February - 10 February
The UNICEF is carrying out distribution of
school sets for the students in the crisis regions as well as for the
students - IDPs accommodated in the collective centers and in
host-families. School books were distributed to 28,000 students, and
24,000 received school bags and school materials.
The CRS completed the rehabilitation of the
schools in Lopate the school "May 25" in Skopje.
The school in Brest was cleaned from mines
and other unexploded devices, however the building was severely damaged in
the conflict. At this moment, 24 students live in Brest.
28 January - 3 February
Regarding the rehabilitation of the schools
in the crisis regions, repairs have been carried out in 36 school
buildings. 35 schools are being repaired.
The UNICEF started the second phase of
distribution of school sets. The project includes 92 schools in the
regions impacted by the crisis, as well as schools that received large
number of students - IDPs.
17-23 December
An Italian corporation opened a tender for reconstruction
of the school buildings in Matejce (the old part of the building), Slupcane
(the old school building) and in Aracinovo (the new school building).
World Vision distributed school sets (maps, mathematics tools etc.) for
the students from the school in Opae.
26 November - 2 December
World Vision has completed the rehabilitation of the
school in Opae.
The German KFOR contingent have completed the repairs on the schools in
Neprosteno, Vratnica and Zilce.
The Danish Red Cross carried out repairs on the school in Sipkovica.
19-25 November
Since November 19, about 700 students from the school
in Aracinovo do not attend the classes. So far, the students attended
the education in tents, but that became impossible due to the cold weather.
The school building has not been repaired yet.
On November 20, the South East Europe University was formally opened in
Tetovo. This is the first private university in Macedonia. The education
will be carried out in three languages: Macedonian, Albanian and English.
The UNICEF reported on the status of the schools in the regions impacted
by the crisis: out of 78 schools damaged in the conflict, 10% have been
rehabilitated, 51% are being repaired, 5% can be repaired with assistance
from donors and funds are needed for rehabilitation of 44% of the damaged
school buildings. The UNICEF continues to distribute schoolbooks and school-sets
to all accessible school buildings.
12-18 November
Cooperazione Italiana started
with rehabilitation of the school building in Aracinovo.
UNICEF reported that $ 260,000 are needed for equiping the schools in
the crisis regions with school furniture, that has been destroyed during
the conflict.
5-11 November
The UNICEF reported that rehabilitation is needed in
77 school buildings. In five of them the rehabilitation was already completed,
28 will be rehabilitated with funds already approved by donors, and seven
will be rehabilitated with funds that were promised by the donors. This
leaves 37 schools uncovered. UNICEF also reported that the education is
not taking place in 12 schools, either because the students are displaced
or because the school buildings need repairs.
The MCIC completed the repairs on the windows in six classrooms in the
school in Matejce. This enabled the education to start.
29 October - 4 November
MCMS initiated the repairs of the primary school in
the village Matejche that shall be carried out in cooperation with the
Cooperatzione Italiana.
UNICEF distributed textbooks for the IDP childrens, 15,000 for ethnic
Albanians and 5,000 for ethnic Macedonians.
22-28 October
The French Agency Solidarite has replaced all
windows and carried out reparations of minor damages of the Neproshteno
School
UNICEF has prepared a list of schools that at the moment do not function,
due to damages done during the conflict. Around 35 schools have a need
of quick rehabilitation: some are to be fully reconstructed, whereas others
need certain reparations.
15-21 October
The solidaries with money ECHO
is rehabilitating the schools in Otjla and Neprosteno.
8-14 October
At the last coordination meeting organized by UNICEF,
the possibilities for reconstruction of the damaged school buildings in
the regions of crisis were presented. 10 out of total of 12 schools will
be reconstructed in the first phase, and nine out of 13 in the second.
The Solidarites will carry out most of the repairing activities using
ECHO funds, and the Catholic Relief Services - CRS, World Vision and the
MCIC will be also included in the project. The MCIC will carry out reconstruction
of the schools in Matejce and Slatino and will carry out evaluation of
the school building in the village of Radusa.
On October 12-13, the students, ethnic Albanians, from three highschools
in Kumanovo started a self-organized education in the elementary schools
"Naim Fraseri" and "Bajram Sabani." Due to security
reasons they demanded to attend the classes separate from the other students.
1-7 October
On October 3, the Albanian students of "Goce Delcev"
high school in Kumanovo interrupted the classes once more. The Albanian
newspaper, "Fakti", says that they interrupted classes because
there was no transport provided for the students of the Lipkovo region,
and they wanted to have the classes in the same building. On October 4,
the Macedonian students interrupted the classes and demanded a separate
entrance to be made for the Albanian students.
UNICEF completed the distribution of school materials and books, with
which 26,500 children were helped.
UNICEF proceeds with quick evaluation of the damage of schools, and managed
to allocate 14 schools in need of renovation. This help has been distributed
to the ECHO/Solidarites, CRS, World Vision and MCIC.
24-30 September
After an 18 day boycott of classes, about 600 Albanian
secondary school children returned to the schools in Kumanovo.
The pupils from the Macedonian language classes from the elementary school
"Bratstvo-Migeni" in Tetovo still have their classes in the
school courtyard.
Classes have not commenced as yet in the schools in the villages Urvic,
Novo Selo and Jelovjane because the teachers cannot reach their jobs.
17-23 September
The new school year has not started yet in any
of the six primary schools in the Lipkovo municipality, where about 4.000
pupils are awaiting the beginning of the school year. According to the
Head of the Civilian Protection Body, measures are being undertaken in
the villages in the Lipkovo municipality for the schooling to begin around
October 1. The pupils, both Macedonians and Albanians, from the village
of Opae attend school in the neighbouring village of Lopate, municipality
of Kumanovo.
Solidarites continues the reconstruction of the school in Aracinovo. The
works are expected to finish in 10 days.
Charity action.
On September 23, the association of citizens "ART-forum" organised
a charity action for collection of school material and winter clothes
for the displaced children.
10-16 September
The education did not start in the schools in Neprosteno,
Lesok and Tearce. In some elementary schools in Tetovo, the parents and
the students, ethnic Macedonians (like the school "Bratstvo-Migjeni")
disagree the education to continue in the premises of the school and they
point to the kindergarten near the Sports Center as an alternative.
The students - ethnic Albanians from the "Goce Delcev" highschool
in Kumanovo submitted a letter, saying that they did not feel safe to
go to school together with the students-Macedonians. They asked for the
education to continue in the building of the Workers' University "Profesor
Mijalkovic."
"Klasje na Dobrinata" provided 1,000 school bags and 4,000 notebooks
for the displaced persons.
3-9 September
The new school year started on
September 10.
The students - displaced persons will continue their education in places
where they are accommodated. The Coordination Body for Crisis Management
will provide organized transportation for the students and pupils from
Jazince to Tetovo and Skopje.
The MCIC completed the reconstruction of the elementary school in the
village of Brnjarci.
The Solidarite started with preparations for reconstruction of the old
school in Aracinovo. One of the three school buildings will be reconstructed
by the end of the week, the second one in two to three weeks and the last
one in 1,5 to two months.
27 August - 2 September
The Government of the Republic of Macedonia decided
to start the school year on the 10th of September, instead of the 1st
of September.
20-26 August
UNICEF has agreed to support schools in Kumanovo with
textbooks, school supplies and furniture once an official request is made.
13-19 August
Due to the current political-security situation
in the country, there is an uncertainty for the beginning of the new school
year in the crisis regions and for the IDP. The start depends on the situation
on the field, the refurbishment of the school buildings that were damaged
in the crisis regions stricken by military activity.
6-12 August
UNICEF is continually working on providing conditions
for the commencing of the school year in the crisis areas.
23-29 July
In the education sector, cooperation with the
Ministry of Education has been established for socialization of the disabled
children.
UNICEF and the Ministry of Education will establish
sub-body for coordination of activities and evaluate whether the standards
for the beginning of the new semester have been fulfilled.
