May 20 - 26, 2002 SKOPJE, May 27th, 2002 HUMANITARIAN SITUATION Displaced persons According to the latest registration, the number of IDPs currently accommodated in host-families is 13,887. Total of 2,514 are accommodated in collective centers. According to the data from the UNHCR, approximately 8,000 refugees (ethnic Albanians) are accommodated in Kosovo. HUMANITARIAN RESPONSE Food The office of the World Food Program will be closed by the end of May. The distribution of food for the IDPs, host-families and socially threatened persons will continue through ECHO until July. The distribution of food for the IDPs will continue until November. Health Mobile medical teams of the American Red Cross are carrying out health protection activities in the three clinics in the Lipkovo area (Matejce, Slupcane and Nikustak.) Approximately 80 patients are examined daily. Infrastructure The UNHCR has so far approved 43 quick impact projects. The OCHA has asked for urgent funds in amount of approximately €16 million for reconstruction of 909 houses that suffered damage of 3rd and 4th category. Schools The UNHCR has approved quick impact projects for rehabilitation of the schools in Bojane, Gorjane and Karpos. Humanitarian demining AccoThe ITF continues with the activities for cleaning of the terrain from mines. At this moment, the ITF teams are working in Nikustak and Goshince. The ICRC announced the fourth phase of the campaign for mine awareness, which includes theater plays. The ICRC plans to organize 80-100 plays by November.
Financing The European Agency for Reconstruction waits for approval from Brussels for the budget for Macedonia which amount €40 million this year.
