1. Reconstruction / Rehabilitation

MCIC informed the group about some changes in the rehabilitation list maintained by UNICEF: MCIC will rehabilitate the school in Matejce; Solidarites are doing the rehabilitation of the school in Otlja.

CRS has committed to rehabilitate the following additional schools: PS "25 Maj"- Cento, Skopje; PS "Kiril i Metodij"-Tetovo; PS "A.Zdravkovski"-Jegunovce, Tetovo; PS "Karpos"- Ljubodrag, Kumanovo. According to an assessment made by CRS the school in Ljubodrag has very minor damage but rehabilitation is needed for the water and sanitation facilities.

Lack of access to Nikustak village is reportedly still a problem; however some 80% of the villagers are back in the village. The school staff has for some years refused rehabilitation; instead, they insist on a completely new school. A suggestion was made that school activities could be held outside the school building in the interim.

Solidarites together with ECHO have committed to do the rehabilitation of the school in Neprosteno village.

Solidarites has assessed the schools in Semsevo and Radusa and will report at the next meeting whether they will do the reconstruction of these two schools. MCIC also have an interest in that school, so they will coordinate and agree bilaterally.

UNICEF reported on their meeting with the Ministry of Education and Science on 8 October 2001. The Ministry provided the updated list for school rehabilitation. UNICEF continues to inform the Ministry about changes regarding the status of rehabilitation as presented by agencies in the Working Group. The Ministry invites those agencies listed for rehabilitation efforts to approach them individually for final approval.

It was mentioned that German KFOR is interested in rehabilitating 10 schools in the Tetovo area. UNICEF will investigate and provide information at the next meeting.

MCIC have done the technical assessment of the schools in Slatino and Lesok. They are ready to repair the windows of the Slatino school; the school in Lesok has severe damage and therefore it may be better to build a new school.

2.
Refugees

UNICEF is continuing with the distribution of textbooks for the refugees settled in Skopje and other cities in Macedonia.

UNHCR held discussions with the villagers of Katlanovo village and will, as a result, reconstruct the Macedonian-speaking primary school.

There was a minor incident with Albanian-speaking children who attend the school in Konjare village and now their parents refuse to let them go to school.

UNHCR is conducting field assessments of refugees settled in host families, including whether children are back in school. UNHCR is also trying to solve related transportation problems. More than 50 refugees are interested in attending evening school.

UNHCR will present their assessment of refugee needs at next weeks' meeting.
