1. Reconstruction/Rehabilitation

The updated rehabilitation list was reviewed for changes and subsequently amended.

UNICEF informed that Alisei are withdrawing from school rehabilitation, so if any other agencies are interested in rehabilitating those schools they are encouraged to apply.

World Vision informed that the villagers from Opae were returning and are cleaning the school, but there is a danger of mines and UXOs due to their return to the village.

World Vision are expecting answer from the donors about all the schools they are interested in rehabilitating, and will provide more specific data on the next meeting.

World Vision informed about a meeting with the principal of the school in Nikustak. He insists on building a new school instead of rehabilitating the old one. After assessing the school, World Visions' architects concluded that rehabilitation will be difficult to conduct. Unfortunately, no donor is interested in building a new school. The director will ask UNICEF to provide containers to satisfy the needs of the children during the winter. The villagers are interested in doing labour work if a new school is to be build.

Solidarites informed that both schools in Gosince were burned down. It may be better to rehabilitate the new one since it was finished just before the crisis.

CRS, German KFOR and USAID had a meeting to discuss their priorities and joint rehabilitation re the school in Jegunovce.

UNICEF emphasised the priority of the schools in Arachinovo and Opae in the context of confidence building for return.

World Vision asked for UNICEF assistance in reaching the Under-secretary for Primary education, Mr. Gorgi Ilievski, for the issuance of approval for the rehabilitation of the schools in the villages of Vinicani and Nerashte. It was agreed that this be included in the minutes and updated table regularly submitted to the Ministry for information.

2. Refugees

The distribution of textbooks is almost finished and the distribution of school kits is ongoing.

Children from CC Katlanovo will continue attending school on Monday 5 November 2001.

Makarenko evening school is regularly attended by all beneficiaries.

3. Other Educational Programmes

CRS are thinking of conducting programmes for peace building and conflict resolution.

UNICEF informed about its intention to implement a conflict resolution project in the secondary schools in Kumanovo and the primary school "Bratstvo Migeni" in Tetovo, and asked if any organisation would be interested in collaborating.
