Reconstruction/Rehabilitation

Solidarites informed that they have finished the reconstruction of the school in Vaksince. The rehabilitation in Ropajce and Vistica has been delayed due to the bad weather conditions. As soon as the weather is better, the work in Ropajce will continue; the rehabilitation of the school in Vistica is pending the UNHCR QIPS project.

Solidarites are interested in rehabilitation of the schools in Gosince, Lukare, Brest, Malina Maala, Tanusevci, Hondolarska Maala, N.Reka, Odhzilarska Maala, Poroj and PS"Lirija" - Skopje.

CRS have completed the rehabilitation of the schools in Ljuboten, Ljubanci, Brvenica, PS"Kiril i Metodij" – Tetovo; they have finished the protection (protective grids) of windows in the school in Jegunovce and they expect to complete the rehabilitation of the schools in Lopate, Josifovo and PS"25 Maj" – Skopje in 7 days.

Regarding the new school building (upper primary classes) in Arachinovo, no agency has available containers to provide temporary shelter. Since the reconstruction of the PS "25 Maj" (school close to Arachinovo) will be finished in 7 days one possible solution may be to transport the children from Arachinovo to PS "25 Maj". Funding for this option should be investigated.

DRC are interested in rehabilitation of 3-4 schools damaged directly by the crisis. Suggestions wre made from the list of uncommitted schools.

UNICEF informed that has some funds available for rehabilitation of schools in the wider conflict area. All agencies are invited to co-operate and/or co-fund. First suggestion is the sanitation system in PS "Braka Ramiz i Hamid" – Suto Orizari.

The rehabilitation list will be updated and attached to the minutes.

Refugees

UNICEF informed that the procedure for signing the certificates for the refugee children that finished the previous school year in the school in Radusa village will start next week.

UNICEF will provide all refugee pupils with record books, tomorrow 11 January.

UNHCR informed that they will continue with the support with snacks for refugee children and the transportation for the school in Katlanovo and they are also planning to continue with the scholarship support programme together with OSI-Macedonia.

Other Education Programmes

IOM informed that they are implementing a confidence building programme with the same strategy and principles like in Kosovo, a mix of small grants for mixed schools and some communication promotion programmes. The centres in Skopje, Kocani and Bitola are already working and two more centres in Kicevo and Tetovo are to be established. Details of the programme will be made available.

CRS is re-starting the School - Parent Partnership Programme in 14 schools all over Macedonia. The criteria for schools selection were: ethnic, geographical and social diversity. According to the project strategy, the school management staff (director, pedagogue) are working together with the Parents’ Council to address school and community problems.

UNICEF has no reply from the Ministry of Education and Science on the project proposal for Confidence Building and Conflict Resolution the conflict – affected regions.

UNICEF informed that the Babylon centres are now funded by the Agency for Youth and Sport through a loan to the Government from the World Bank.
