EDUCATION WORKING GROUP MEETING
Agenda:
1.Reconstruction/Rehabilitation Solidarites informed that they have committed themselves to rehabilitate the school in Gosince. They are also interested in rehabilitation of schools in the wider Skopje area. UNICEF informed that they are providing school furniture for schools in conflict affected areas and for small number of schools in the other parts of the country. The distribution process is on-going; UNICEF will share the distribution list with interested members of the Working Group. Solidarites will conduct rehabilitation of the water and sanitation facilities in PS "Braka Ramiz i Hamid", Project co-funded by UNICEF and ECHO. 2.Refugees UNICEF and UNHCR informed that an incident happened in the school in Katlanovo with the teacher of refugee children. Children’s parents refused to let their children attend school unless the teacher is replaced. With UNICEFs’ quick response the problem was solved: the teacher has been replaced and the children are back in school. UNICEF reported cases of Hepatitis among children in PS "Braka Ramiz i Hamid"; an immediate rehabilitation of the water and sanitation facilities in the school is needed. UNHCR will continue scholarship support to secondary and university students, in collaboration with FOSIM. 3.Other Education Programmes UNICEF is still waiting for a response form the Ministry of Education and Science for the implementation of the Tolerance Building Project in the three municipalities (Tetovo, Kumanovo and Skopje); in the meantime, UNICEF will commence with a pilot project in the Tetovo Pioneer House. More data will be provided next meeting. 4.AOB It was agreed that all agencies submit the updates on their rehabilitation work to UNICEF on Thursday 14th February 2002 by 3:00 p.m. so that the rehabilitation list could be updated and shared for better co-ordination. UNICEF will participate in the Shelter and Infrastructure Meeting at UNHCR, Fridays 9.15. The next Education Working Group meeting will be held on Thursday, 21st March 2002 at 3:00 p.m. at UNICEF Conference Room.
